BECAUSE the Ukrainians have spent most of the past thousand years under the domination of other peoples, recognition of their identity as a people has come slowly, and recognition of their great national literature has come only recently. The Ukrainian Poets is the first comprehensive survey of their poetry in English.
The anthology begins with the translation in its entirety of The Tale of Ihor’s Campaign, the great epic poem written in the twelfth century. The collection reflects episodes in the development of Ukrainian poetry: the “dark ages” of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; the cultural revival of the sixteenth century; Baroque influence; the literary decline of the eighteenth century; Romanticism, coming belatedly to Ukraine; the Realism of the nineteenth century, and the social role of the poets of this period; the enormous poetic vigour after World War I; the various Europeanizing trends; the literary purges of the thirties and forties; and the creative activity of contemporary poets in a number of countries, experimenting with new techniques and principles.
Dr. Andrusyshen has chosen the selections, produced a close and exact interpretation of the texts, and provided notes and an introduction. Dr. Kirkconnell, working from the Ukrainian and the literal English versions, has created English verse in identical or equivalent metres. The result of this collaboration is a definitive volume of Ukrainian poetry for both Slavic specialist and general reader.
This anthology has been sponsored by the Ukrainian Canadian Committee.
