PREFACE

This manual contains the solutions to most of the odd problems of the textbook, Elementary Statistics, Third Edition, by Mario Triola. In the worked problems, the detail of the computations is provided along with reasons for making the various steps. By this means students can follow the reasoning used to arrive at a solution. In addition, reference to formulas and examples of the text should assist the student.

In many instances the answer in this manual will differ slightly from the answer provided in the text. This is, for the most part, due to differences in the selection of significant digits. For example, if you are dividing by the square root of 3, you will get a different answer if you divide by 1.7 as opposed to dividing by 1.732. Both methods might be correct, but the numericalanswers may differ slightly.

The problems of Chapter 1 were not worked. In addition some problems through the other chapters were omitted. In most cases the reason for the omission was that it was felt that there had been a sufficient number of similar problems worked. Consequently, there would not be sufficient assistance to students to warrant inclusion.

I would like to express my appreciation to those who assisted me in the preparation of this manual. In particular I would like to thank my secretary, Mrs. Claire Bartels, for her aid on many aspects of the preparation. Finally, I would like to thank Mario Triola for writing a fine statistics book.
