Psychotropic Substances Research is a fully open access, peer-reviewed journal publishing research and commentary on the use of psychotropic substances in medicine, psychology and psychotherapy. Psychotropic substances are defined as psychoactive drugs that effect an individual's mental state by altering mood, perception, cognition, or behaviour. This includes applications for substances that fall under the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances, as well as new psychoactive substances, natural plants and fungi with psychedelic properties, and substances that have specific uses in cultural, ritual and religious contexts. In addition, Psychotropic Substances Research provides a resource for informed policy discussion and public discourse on the appropriate use of psychotropic substances in medicine. The journal also aims to inform the organisation of health research systems for psychotropic substances according to current national and international regulations and to foster engagement with differing cultural and religious perspectives on using psychotropic substances more broadly. Psychotropic Substances Research therefore aims to be multidisciplinary and support clinical medicine, psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry and genetics, public health, public policy, traditional medicine, anthropology, and ethnobotany. Examples of psychotropic drugs the journal aims to platform include: cannabis and cannabinoid derivatives (e.g. THC, CBD); natural and synthetic psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin and DMT; amphetamine-type stimulants such as MDMA (ecstasy); barbiturates; benzodiazepines, cocaine and coca-derived substances; as well as certain opiates. Examples of entheogens (substances used in cultural or religious contexts) include mescaline and ayahuasca. .
