... As we approach 1988, the yearof the millennium ofChristianity in Rus'-Ukraine, we should not fotget another, very different anniversary that falls at the same time. It will be 50 yearsago that a great horror was perpetrated against the Ukrainian people, when representatives of a Communist occupational government murdered hundreds of innocent men and women. For many of these victims possession of a little cross, or a prayer book, or simply an open avowal of their faith was grounds for torture and death.
This horrible crime of genocide, this holocaust, was conducted by a foreign Communist regime in the town of Vinnytsia in the years 1937-39. It was discovered only five years later, during the occupation of Ukraine by another genocidal regime - this time, the German Nazis.
