Much cognition only makes sense within certain social systems, in particular many social structures and processes are only possible if members have the necessary cognitive abilities. By contrast, this journal, Socio-Cognitive Systems: Computational and Formal Approaches, looks at simulations and systems that integrate social and cognitive aspects into a single framework. The social reality in which a computational socio-cognitive system operates is very complex and changes constantly based on human interactions. By understanding cognitive systems in their social settings and social systems in the light of their cognitive foundations, this journal develops a new understanding of both the cognitive and the social. Many phenomena make more sense when these two aspects are brought together, among them: social norms, conventions, and practices; institutions; social networks and their dynamics; group recognition and membership; development of (social) identity; status and power relations; plan coordination; social agency; social adaptation; social self-regulation; constructing social reality; complex negotiations; agreed naming and reference; cultural coherence; foundations of communication; constructing and coordinating complex value-chains; enculturation; and codevelopment of social context.   Socio-Cognitive Systems: Computational and Formal Approaches welcomes high-quality research articles that go beyond looking at social aspects of individual cognition or the properties of individuals in social systems and seeks to truly integrate these two layers. We particularly welcome interdisciplinary research, and novel approaches to relating the cognitive and the social. The journal favours approaches with identifiable empirical or computational or formal content – both systems constructed for a particular goal in mind and models of observed or theoretical systems. However, the journal aims to give new insights into social science, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence, i.e., merely formalising or implementing a system is not enough.   Papers may include: simulations of observed SCS, relating simulations to empirical evidence of some kind; implementations of working SCS, with an assessment of its performance and working properties; results of experiments, e.g., testing hypotheses about SCS; qualitative or quantitative observations of SCS; formalizations that give insights into relations between concepts of SCS, in particular if they indicate new ways of modelling or implementing SCS; literature reviews; and position papers that offer exceptional or radically novel insights in the structuration of SCS. .
