Preface
This Second Edition of Principles of Clinical Toxicology emphasizes the same goal as the First Edition. It is a textbook for students of pharmacy and the health sciences to help them learn the principles of clinical toxicology. Principles are rules of action or reasons why certain procedures are undertaken; they are also the foundation of a science. This book adheres to its title in that it is neither a reference book nor a laboratory manual; rather, it attempts to explain fundamental principles. By understanding the basis for events that occur and the reasons why a certain treatment is used or perhaps not used, we should be able to approach any toxic emergency with few reservations.
Since publication of the First Edition, we received a number of suggestions for change and have incorporated those that strengthen the book as a text. This Second Edition has been updated, and many portions were revised in format and content to reflect contemporary toxicology. For example, anticholinergics, phenothiazines, and tricyclic antidepressants have been combined into one chapter. Topics such as toxicokinetics and cardiovascular drugs have been added. The case studies following each chapter have been expanded. We also shunned incorporating all known poisons which would be impractical for a single volume, and digress from the book’s primary objectives.
