Book 6 in the Glencoe Essentials of Reading series is written for you. The stories are about people, their friends, their families, and their lives. You will read about the changes a family faces when an elderly relative moves in with them. You will meet a young man planning to ask his boss for a raise, and a woman who is about to become a U.S. citizen. There are also readings about jobs in food service and how to plan a healthy birthday party.
Would you like to learn how to read a food label? You can in the part called A Closer Look at Food Labels. You will find out how to become a voter, and in another feature you will learn the right way to administer medicines. In A Closer Look at Test Taking, you will learn how to become a better test taker. You will solve some problems for a divorced father in You Can Solve the Problem. There is also a story about the importance of mammograms.
After each story, there is a part called Words, Words, Words. In this part, there is work for you to do with words. There is also a Word Story that tells about words in the world of business and job hunting. You will do two more pages about Understanding and Discussion. Here, you will share your thoughts and ideas about the story.
At the end of this book, there are some entries from a journal written a long time ago. These entries come from the novel called The Gathering of Days by Joan W. Bios.
