The Redemptorist priest, Achiel Delaere, left his home in Flanders, Belgium, survived shipwreck off Newfoundland in 1899, and finally began work in the Prairie Parkland in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. While building several of the Roman Catholic churches and parishes that now dot the landscape, he could not help but notice that the Ukrainian immigrants had no priests to help them organize their own religious life. In 1906, he adopted the Byzantine rite to work more closely with the Ukrainian immigrants and then struggled to establish many of the institutions that mark the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Canada: a bishop, a diocese, schools, churches, chapels, and parishes. This is his biography; one of struggle and triumph.
